fear

not gonna lie, seals and sea lions terrify me. when i was younger, i accidentally got too close to one at stewart island and it chased me down the beach. the memory is still crystal clear and haunts me to this day as i've had a fear of them ever since. living in dunedin means that seals and sea lions are a common sight, but i still don't feel any more comfortable around them. this afternoon, olivia and i went on a little friday escape to sandfly bay, one of the most common spots around dunedin for sea lions. there were so many of them... basking in the sunlight... lazing on the beach... cuddled up against one another. we ran up and down the sand dunes, catching up on life and ate multiple fruju tropical snows between us (thumbs up for you if you know what they are!).

whilst i was photographing these creatures, their beauty started to reveal itself to me through my lens. they really don't want to harm us, and like most animals, will only react if they feel threatened. olivia is pretty much a mermaid and swims with them all the time (she is a diver and is always in the water), and seeing her fearlessness around these creatures gave me a sense of bravery myself.

something in me changed this afternoon.
it was so peaceful standing there, beside the ocean.
i felt my fear slip away with the outgoing tide.
it was the most exhilarating feeling.
